Ein Tsunami des Mitfühlens

Die furchtbare Erdbeben- und Tsunami-Katastrophe, die Japan am vergangenen Wochenende getroffen hat (und die sich immer noch fortsetzt, durch Nachbeben und kleineren Tsunamis) hat im spruchwörtlichen Sinne die gesamte Welt erschüttert.  Berichterstattung in den Nachrichten 24 Stunden am Tag, Live-Filmmaterial von den großen Sendern sowie Amateur-Videos auf YouTube und anderswo lassen die Welt sehen, wie gewaltig der Schaden ist, unter dem Japan leidet.  Die Zahl der Todesopfer steigt fortlaufend, ausgedehnte Landstriche sind ausgelöscht worden, und ganze Städte wurden in die Vergessenheit gespült.

Wir werden zu Zeugen von Verwüstung und Zerstörung biblischen Ausmaßes  -  eine neue Sintflut, die aber nicht durch 40 endlose Tage voller Regen ausgelöst wurde, sondern durch ein tektonisches Phänomen, das nur wenige Herzschläge lang gedauert hat.

Was die Situation sogar noch bedrohlicher macht, ist die Gefahr, die von den beiden Kernkraftwerken Fukushima I und Fukushima II ausgeht. Alle Versuche, die Situation dort unter Kontrolle zu bringen, haben keinerlei Resultate erbracht. Die Lage ist nach wie vor kritisch, und die Vorzeichen für das, was möglicherweise noch kommen kann, sind nicht gut.

Unterstützung wird gebraucht, die Arbeitskraft von technischen Spezialisten und passendes Gerät. Aber sogar dann ist der Ausgang dieser Sache ungewiss; es steht beängstigend viel auf dem Spiel, und die Gefahr eines GAU (Größter Anzunehmender Unfall) schwebt drohend über Japan und der gesamten Welt wie ein Damoklesschwert.

Deshalb sollten wir möglicherweise der Liste, die ich da soeben hingekritzelt habe, jener Liste von Dingen, die gebraucht werden, noch  Gebete  hinzufügen. Gebete ... und  Mitfühlen.

Ein Tsunami des Mitfühlens.

Um den Versuch zu machen,
jenen Tsunami auszugleichen,
der all dieses Leid ausgelöst hat.

Denn da sind nun Menschen, die leiden ...
Menschen, die Angst haben ...
Menschen, die Schmerzen erleiden ...
Menschen, die gestorben sind ...

... und da sind Menschen, die zwar überlebten,
die aber alles verloren haben,
was sie in dieser Welt hatten.

...

A Tsunami of Compassion

The dreadful earthquake and tsunami catastrophe that shattered Japan last weekend (and still continues doing so, by aftershocks and new, albeit smaller tsunamis), has literally shaken the whole world. News coverage 24 hours a day, live network broadcast footage plus amateur videos on YouTube and elsewhere make the world see how massive the damage is that Japan suffers from. Death numbers are constantly on the rise, widespread areas have been wiped out, and entire towns have been swept to oblivion.

We become witness of devastation and destruction of biblical measures  -  the Flood re-enacted; triggered this time not by 40 endless days of rain, but by a tectonic phenomenon that did not last longer than a few heartbeats.

What makes the situation even more threatening is the danger that comes from the damage caused to the nuclear power plants Fukushima I and Fukushima II.

All attempts to get the situation under control have not yielded results. The situation is critical, and the signs of what may still come are not good.

Support is needed, technical specialists' manpower and appropriate hardware. But even then, the outcome is unsure, the odds are frighteningly high, and the possibility of an MCA (Maximum Credible Accident) hovers over Japan and the world like the Sword of Damocles.

So we should possibly still add prayers to that list of needed things, that I scribbled down. Prayers ... and compassion.

A Tsunami of Compassion.

To try and equal out the one

that brought all the misery.

Because there are people suffering ...

there are people in fear ...

there are people in pain ...

there are people who have died ...

... and there are people who survived,

but who literally lost everything they had in this world.

Helft uns, ihnen zu helfen - YouTuber für Japan

Dies ist eine Video-Kollaboration, an der ich am vergangenen Wochenende beteiligt war.  Das Projekt war die Idee eines talentierten jungen YouTubers, der einen Channel mit dem Namen Collabovies unterhält.

Das Projekt wurde sehr kurzfristig angestoßen und durchgeführt, in dem Bemühen, den Opfern des Erdbebens und des Tsunami in Japan eine Geste des Mitgefühls zu senden, und gleichzeitig die Bitte an jeden Zuschauer des Videos zu richten, persönlich zu helfen, durch eine Spende in jedweder Höhe, klein oder groß, an das Internationale Rote Kreuz oder auch eine jede andere humanitäre Organisation, die Japan in dieser Zeit der Zerstörung und des Leids unterstützt.

Ich habe einen japanischen YouTube-Freund; sein Name ist Sanechika. Und als mich die Nachricht von dem Erdbeben in Japan traf, war ich zutiefst besorgt um ihn und um seine Familie. Am Freitag Nachmittag schrieb ich Sanechika über seinen YouTube-Channel eine Nachricht, aber natürlich hatte ich keine Ahnung, wann (oder ob!) er sie würde lesen können  -  ganz zu schweigen davon, wann er mir möglicherweise würde antworten können.

Zu meiner großen Erleichterung erhielt ich dann aber am Samstag Nachmittag eine Antwort von Sanechika:

Hallo Mr. Michel

Vielen Dank für Deine freundliche Nachricht !!

Danke, dass Du Dich um uns sorgst.

Zum Glück sind wir in Sicherheit.

Wie haben ein solch starkes Erdbeben zum allerersten Mal erlebt. Als dieses Erdbeben sich ereignete, war ich in der Schule. Ich konnte nicht bereifen, was geschah. Ich habe beobachtet, was um mich herum geschah. Gebäude haben sehr stark vibriert. Ich wusste, dass dies ein großes Erdbeben war. Es war wirklich ein furchtbarer Anblick.

Nachbeben ereignen sich ohne Unterlass. Ich habe gerade eben noch ein Nachbeben gespürt.

Diese Nachricht hat mir wirklich einen Stein vom Herzen fallen lassen, und ab da war ich dann in der Lage, mich wirklich auf den Beitrag zu konzentrieren, den ich zu zu der Video-Kollaboration beisteuern wollte.

Ich habe es für passend und richtig empfunden, Sanechika und seine wunderbare Musik in das Video mit einzubeziehen, und so wurde sein Gitarrenspiel das Medium und die emotionale Basis für meinen Beitrag zu dem Video-Projekt.

Help Us, Help Them - YouTubers for Japan

This is a video collaboration I participated in this weekend. The project was the idea of a talented young YouTuber who runs a channel named Collabovies.

The project was ignited and processed on very short notice, in the effort to reach out and show compassion to the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan, and in order to ask every viewer to try and help, by making a whatever small donation to the International Red Cross or any other humanitarian organization that can support Japan in these times of devastation.

I have a Japanese YouTube friend named Sanechika, and when the news about the earthquake hit me, I was worried sick for him and his family. I wrote a message on Friday afternoon to his YouTube channel, but of course I had no idea if or when he might be able to read it, let alone reply to me.

To my immense relief, I received a reply from Sanechika on Saturday afternoon:

Hello Mr. Michel

Thank you very much for your kind message !!
Thank you for caring for us.
Fortunately We are safe.
We experienced such a big earthquake for the first time. When this earthquake was generated, I was in the school. I was not able to understand What happened. I watched surroundings. Buildings vibrated intensely. I knew that a big earthquake happened then. It was the very terrible scene.
An aftershock continues incessantly afterwards, I still felt an aftershock now.
Please send the best regards to your whole family.

This really took a huge load off my mind, and I was able then to really focus on the contribution I wanted to make to the collaboration video. 

It felt like a very right thing to do, to include Sanechika and his wonderful music into my video, and so he and his guitar playing became the carrier and emotional base of this short video contribution of mine.

Mick Karn (July 24th 1958 – January 4th 2011)

In the beginning 1980's,

when I discovered the British band

JAPAN,

I not only encountered,

by their singer

David Sylvian,

a voice that would be special to me

over the decades

until today.

I discovered their bass player

Mick Karn.

Apart from the bass guitar,

he played many instruments,

he sang,

 composed music,

wrote lyrics,

he drew and painted,

and he was a sculptor.

Yet,

Mick's unique way of
playing the fretless bass guitar

was what hit me.

It was like nothing I had ever heard before:

Melodic, complex,

downright unpredictable,
iconic, archetypal,

and of the utmost beauty.

No one among my friends

back then in the 1980's

and until now

ever shared my fascination

for Mick's way of making music.

I did not care.

And I still don't.

I am used to finding stuff

that gets into the very core of me

as if it belonged there from the beginning

and yet

is something that is mine alone

because

no one else I know can really get on board with it
or even knows about it in the first place.

It is a lonely way of cherishing things.

But: I don't mind.

I am glad that I found Mick's music,

that it has been so fascinating for me

over all these years,

and this will always be so.

Godspeed, Mick.

I'll see you in another life, brother.
