Vicco von Bülow, known as Loriot, Germany's most universal, intelligent and precise comedian, died yesterday at the age of 87.
Victor Christoph Carl "Vicco" von Bülow alias Loriot (1924 - 2011) |

Beginning in the 1950's as a sketch artists, Loriot found his way to German TV more or less by chance - and became an institution there that guaranteed best tongue-in-cheek entertainment without any crude humour or slapstick.
Flawless nonsense with Prussian discipline |
Loriot managed in an absolutely unique way to caricature the German way of life with all it's clumsiness and awkwardness - but doing so most lovingly and without spite, and in ways that a nationwide audience comprising of all age groups was his constant fan base, and quotes from his TV sketches have made their way into German conversations and became classics which made everyone grin immediately.
Being a highly musical music (and especially opera) lover, Loriot also got great renown for his presentations of e.g. Richard Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen".
Pappa ante Portas! (Germany 1991) |
Two feature length movies, "Ödipussi" and "Pappa ante Portas", are most popular German comedies that complemented Loriot's success with basically everything he did.
The gap that remains by Loriot's passing
can hardly be closed ...
a gifted, insightful comedian
and chronicler of German way of life is gone.
But his memory will live on,
in numerous TV sketches and cartoons.
