SHALLOW WATERS

In shallow waters, I can't see
Your clear waves lapping at my feet
The lifeless ocean, black not blue
I didn't help, but deep down I knew
In shallow waters I used to see
Dolphins playing in front of me
Seaweed swaying, keeping time
Tidal rhythms, laugh not cry
Oh! Oh! ... Why do tears fall from the sky?
Oh! Oh! ... Have we given up, please tell me why?
Remember the salty ocean breeze?
We used to build castles on the beach
Splashin' around in the summer heat,
But now it's just oil up to our knees
Bring back the days we used to care
When all of these troubles were not there
A cry for help, this is my song
If we do nothing, it will all be gone
In shallow waters I can't see
The wondrous life God created to be
But tankers and pipelines keep comin' through
I turned my head, and so did you
Oh! Oh!
Come with me to the emerald sea
Where black gold spills into my ocean dreams
Nothing to be found, no life is around
It's just the sound
Of mourning in the air
Silence everywhere
Oh! Oh!
If we do nothing, it will all be gone
In shallow waters, I can't see
Your clear waves lapping at my feet ...

Ta'Kaiya Blaney is a 10 year old girl who lives in Northern Vancouver (Canada). She is from the Sliammon First Nation.
From the age of 5, she has been working with a singing instructor, Aileen De La Cruz, who is a professional songwriter and pianist. Together with Aileen, Ta'Kaiya wrote the song "Shallow Waters" and recorded it in July 2010.
The lyrics deal with the dangers that an oil spills pose for all of nature. A proposed oil pipeline in Ta'Kaiya's home region, planned between the Alberta Tar Sands and Kitimat (British Columbia, Canada), is a concrete issue and possible threat that worries Ta'Kaiya. And she is right with this: While still writing the song, the massive oil spill in the Golf of Mexico in 2010 provided saddening proof that the things which Ta'Kaiya sings about can become gruesome reality in an instant!
At her young age, Ta'Kaiya is not only a gifted singer and ambitious songwriter, but also a caring and devoted environmental activist - she has spoken about the dangers of oil spills for the environment at schools and on various events in 2011.
And on top of this all, Ta'Kaiya has even won her first spurs as an actress already, playing the lead in several moving short films!
Her message always comes from the heart and reaches the hearts of those who she addresses to, and her engagement is rewarded (among other things) by the fact that her original song video of "Shallow Waters" has gained more than 50,000 views on YouTube (and counting!).
Ta'Kaiya recently also became recognized by Kids Are Heroes, a non-profit organization which showcases over 200 children and teenagers from the United States, Canada and other countries all over the world, who give back to the community by volunteering and campaigning for charitable projects they plan and execute themselves.
Creating awareness for social topics, raising funds for worthy causes and taking action in various ways to make a difference - the Kids featured by this organization indeed are Heroes, and Ta'Kaiya is a great new member in their ranks!
